    Questions We Often Get Asked About Personal Grievances

    What is a personal grievance?

    It is a formal legal process that allows an employee to challenge an employer’s actions if they believe they have been treated unfairly. Common reasons include unjustified dismissal, disadvantage, bullying, or harassment.

    How do I know if I have grounds to raise a personal grievance?

    You may have grounds if your employer has acted unfairly or breached your employment rights. We review your situation, assess your options, and advise whether a grievance is justified under New Zealand law.

    How long do I have to raise a personal grievance?

    In most cases, you have 90 days from the event or dismissal to raise a grievance. We make sure your claim is raised correctly and within the required timeframe.

    Do I have to go through mediation?

    Most grievances go through mediation first. It gives both sides a chance to discuss what happened and try to reach an agreement. We guide and represent you to protect your position.

    What if mediation does not resolve the issue?

    If mediation does not lead to agreement, the matter can proceed to the Employment Relations Authority. We assist with preparation, representation, and next steps so you remain informed and supported.
