Working With Us - As One of Our People

    People First, Always

At Gibson Sheat, people come first. We’ve built a workplace where relationships matter, balance is encouraged, and everyone has the freedom to be themselves. Whether you're legal or support, you’ll be respected, valued, and welcomed from day one.

We’re a mid-sized firm, with around 100 people across three offices. That means we’re big enough to offer variety and opportunity, but small enough that you’ll never feel like a number. Our people are friendly, down to earth, and genuinely care about each other. Our culture is driven by values we actually live - being real, staying connected, being brave, and making their day. Explore [link to Our Values and Culture] to get a feel for what makes this place tick.

    Work That’s Meaningful and Varied

No two days are the same here, and that’s something we value. You’ll be exposed to a wide range of work that challenges and grows your skills. We support development in areas that spark your interest, and we do our best to help you build a career that feels like your own. Many of our people have carved out specialist niches and followed paths that reflect their strengths. We’ll back you to keep learning, evolving, and doing work you’re proud of. Want to know more about the kind of difference we make? Explore [insert link to Our Impact] and see how our people help shape our communities.

Our partners are approachable, our leadership team is hands-on, and we encourage open kōrero. We take the time to get to know your strengths, your goals, and how we can help you reach them.

Support That Sets You Up For Success

We want you to thrive at work and beyond. Whether you're building your legal career in New Zealand or playing a vital role behind the scenes, you’ll have the tools, support, and encouragement to do your best work. Our standard working week is 37.5 hours, with realistic daily targets that allow time for learning, development, and proper breaks.

New starters are given a warm welcome, a thorough induction, and a full month to settle in before billable targets begin. We make sure everyone is set up for success, with modern offices, reliable tech, and practical tools that make a difference. Flexible working arrangements are available, depending on the role and individual circumstances, because we know balance helps you bring your best — at work and in life.

Benefits That Go Beyond the Basics

We offer competitive salaries, a 3% Kiwisaver employer contribution, and long service leave starting at three years, with many of our team reaching 10, 15, or even 25 years.

Our profit share scheme means that when we hit our goals, everyone benefits. You’ll enjoy a paid day off on your birthday, plus a small gift from us to help you celebrate.

Our Ka Pai recognition programme celebrates the little moments that make a big difference, and our social calendar includes everything from Matariki lunches to dress-up parties, always fun, always optional.

We support career growth across every part of the firm. Our lawyers have clear pathways to progress, with support at every step. Legal executives can step into Associate and Senior Associate roles with benefits aligned to those of our lawyers. Our secretaries and admin team are central to everything we do. Their skills, knowledge, and commitment help Gibson Sheat succeed. We recognise the value they bring, make space for their ideas, and support their growth. Support your people and the rest takes care of itself.

    Learning That’s Built In

Professional development is a priority, not a box tick. Our weekly Good Stuff sessions cover legal updates, wellbeing, diversity, communication, and practical business skills. You will easily meet your CPD hours and pick up a few life skills along the way.

We also offer Move It, our wellbeing focused programme with activities ranging from yoga to bush walks and self defence classes.

We run two mentoring programmes that support learning at every level. Flourish is our firmwide mentoring initiative that connects people across Gibson Sheat to share strengths in specific skill areas. It focuses on short term learning goals such as communication, confidence, technology, leadership behaviours, or client care. Flourish is open to everyone and is managed by Anna Holland Waterson, our HR Manager.

GS Advance is our development programme for junior legal employees in their first two years. Each junior works closely with their team leader and a mentor, with daily learning time built into their schedule and regular check ins to track progress, build confidence, and develop core legal and business skills. GS Advance ensures our newest lawyers and legal executives feel supported, valued, and ready to grow.

    Everyone Belongs Here

We welcome people from all walks of life and work hard to make everyone feel seen, heard, and respected. Our Diversity and Inclusion policy and Anti-Bullying and Harassment policy guide our commitment to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive. We actively support rainbow inclusion, accessibility, and cultural diversity. Some of our training topics include neurodiversity awareness, unconscious bias, NZ Sign Language, te reo Māori, and understanding generational perspectives. We benchmark our gender pay gap annually to ensure fairness and transparency.

Because we are not just aiming for inclusion. We want our people to feel it every day and see it improving as we grow.
