    Tony Herring advises government agencies, businesses, and organisations on commercial, property, and employment matters. He’s known for being practical, strategic, and easy to work with. Clients appreciate his ability to cut through complexity, give clear advice, and stay focused on results. He combines legal expertise with commercial insight, bringing clarity, drive and a focus on results.

    He is trusted legal counsel to key public sector clients including the New Zealand Police and Ministry of Justice. His work spans procurement, facilities management, leasing, contract drafting and negotiation, and advice under the Public Works and Reserves Acts. He also advises on business structuring, joint ventures, shareholder matters, employment strategy, and health and safety compliance.

    Tony joined Gibson Sheat in 2021 after nearly two decades as a partner at a leading Christchurch firm. He is also a Notary Public and regularly assists people with their international legal documentation needs.

    Tony is actively involved in the wider community and holds a number of governance roles across the legal, education, and sports sectors. He is President of The Law Association, Chairman of the AFS Educational Trust and serves as a Director of Two Thumb Brewing Company. He is also a Trustee of the Hoa Motuhake Special Friends Sports Trust and the Telise Kelly Memorial Trust and acts as Honorary Solicitor for the Deaf Sports Federation of New Zealand. 

    Outside of work, Tony enjoys travel, golf, live music and spending time with family and friends. He has completed marathons on all seven continents, including his final race in Antarctica.
